A variety of research studies available in the public domain show that incorporating active learning strategies in school education significantly impact the student learning experience. It enables them to see the real-life application of concepts explained in theory. In our experience, active learning sessions have led to an increased motivation to learn. Activities which are thought provoking not only bring out but also enhance critical thinking abilities & logical aptitude in students. It has increased curiosity and the willingness to explore and self-learn. It has also allowed teachers to observe learning styles. These insights further help in expanding the range and type of activities which we can employ to make learning a joy for our students.

Here are some examples of the typical active learning strategies that we have at Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School, with differing complexity depending on the age-group of the students:

Hands – On Learning

We recently got our junior school members to showcase the plants that they had grown from the seed stage to an adult plant and also talk about what they learnt from the experience. The discussion focused on the type of plant and its role in maintaining the environmental balance around us. The objective was to give them a first-hand introduction into environmental sustainability and its importance in our life.

The class recently finished a chapter in Science- Animals: Birds. Looking to revise the lesson, but not in the old school worksheet way, the teacher conducted an activity which made the children understand the importance of working in pairs and they also learnt that it’s not necessary to rote learn when you can remember the key points in a fun way.
After all ‘Learning is a joy forever’. Right!

 

Role-Play

You might wonder what English Literature has to do with business, however for our Std X students it was an enjoyable experience to enact a Shark Tank inspired session where students marketed luxury chocolates which had the qualities of Portia, the female lead from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. It proved to be interplay between creativity, business planning and logical thinking. Not to mention, a great way to boost self-confidence and also have fun along the way.

Drawing & Painting

For the young uns, what better way to learn and differentiate between colours than to give them a way to express themselves through art. We got our juniors to cut and paint penguins to learn precision and also learn the colours black and white. With younger children having shorter attention spans and high energy, such activities not only help in keeping them focused but the learning is thorough, fun and unforgettable.

Close Reading & Visual Analysis

We have regular sessions of group discussions on various prescribed topics and their relevance in real life or pieces of literature and poems, where students are encouraged to present their interpretation. This can also apply to visual abstracts, art and photographs of real-life situations. The school has regular debate competitions and also encourages students to participate in inter-school competitions. This is supported by activities where children encouraged to demonstrate their learning through physical renditions of concepts.

Junior Botanists

Students of class VI at work studying different types of leaves (simple & compound) & artistically demonstrating their understanding in the form of beautiful ‘Torans’ and ‘Wall Hangings’.

Collage – making activity integrated with Art where students displayed the different shapes for the Bacterial cells using edible food items and collages.

A Working Model of the Human Heart

Organized by the Class VII students, the activity focused on recreating a physical and working model of the human heart to demonstrate the understanding of its functions.

Activity Based Formative Assessments

Student Groups make models on the topic to be assessed and present it in class with a verbal overview about the project in question. This is followed by a competitive group discussion and a quiz round.

Debate on Equity and Preference Shares by Std. IX
Organized to gain a better understanding of the interplay between debt and equity in the financial markets. The pros and cons of investment and how equity – stocks and shares are made public for purchase.

Knowing our history

This activity was conducted by STD.IX students to demonstrate their learning of India’s historical monuments and their place in our rich heritage and culture.

Interactive Events

Our students participated in IIMUN was a Back-to-School event was organized to help students develop global leadership qualities. Interaction with famous global Indian icons made the event interesting and insightful.

Understanding Democracy & the importance of voting

Students of Std. X learnt their first lesson of Democracy by casting a vote for the President and Vice President of their club through a secret ballot.
